The infamous ACTION DEAD MOUSE from Italy are back with a new amazing effort: "Revenge of Doormats and Coasters". After a first effort (« Pets and Nerds Attack Planet Earth » - Greed Recordings – 2007) that gathered critical acclaim as well as a warm welcome from the well-taught audiences of amateurs of indie rock that flirts with anything labeled « post » or « math », the Italian quartet has put together refined arrangements and yet more precise compositions that blend the singularity of Do Make Say Think and the complexity of the sampling delights of Don Caballero or, closer to us, Battles.
This time around, the grooooop has expanded its scope and, apart from a change in personnel with the wise addition of Michi from the well-known My Awesome Mixtape, succeeded in adding a thin gloss to their overall sound. Here the tracks bounce around displaying an untame joy, just like a horny octopus on a heavy diet of Vitamin C.
From the very beginning of opening track « Tom Cruise told me Dan Savio is not dead », the edgy riffs - akin to Shellac - soon get to meet volatile and majestic brass instruments, and all that within a great overall harmony, showing the possibilities developped by these awesome guys. Here each track comprises several others. So talking about a multilayered oeuvre is totally relevant, like a wide open Pandora box, a palpable but not quite reachable Graal.
You will be instantly seduced by the intertwined viola and guitars on « Concerto for One Hand Clapping »; you will admire the looped guitars à la Sleeping People on « 2nd World Warhol », only to be soothed by the relief of "Room 121" that tackles the best of Mogwaï (circa "Young Team"); you will also love the moody atmosphere that is clerverly unfolded (sharp>aerial>bouncy) in « Dancing Paper Solo ».
Overall, The savvy looped guitars rub themselves against a drumset that knows how to oscillate between the calm and the storm and the subtile groove of a bass that swirls in the corners, sometimes heavy and sometimes aerial. In each track, an unexpected break, a wistful violin, the comforting whistle of a trumpet or the liberating sprawl of a ragged voice, take the listener by surprise, leaving him breathless and different, definitely like the first cigarette after some good lovin'.
